Textiles have been a predominant industry in India, and  weavers, its faithful vanguards. Textiles are today the  country’s second largest industry after agriculture, India’s  textile industry is a village based industry, with a profusion of  skill hidden from the world.

Handloom weavers account for such a large percentage  of the textile production, the demand for their skills is on the  decline. Numerous committees, commissions and task forces  have tried to evaluate and strategize the future of this craft,  but the number of handloom weavers decrease by 2% every  year.

Handloom prices are determined by external factors, all of which impede growth and are far beyond the handloom industry’s control, like international production trends, and slow development of pre and post processing facilities. Added to this, the heavy dependence on Government subsidies for existence, while having to rely on a slow growth area like cotton textiles. Reason enough for handloom weavers to migrate to power loom factories.
